The room I stayed in had no heater in the bathroom and it was -2°c outside so it was very cold, there was no shower and not enough hot water to fill the very narrow bath. Breakfast was in a cupboard in the room and I had to make myself. The host was friendly and helpful . For 85 pounds I would expect more

Camera essenziale, così come il bagno; situata in zona tranquilla ma vicina al centro. Il letto è comodissimo. Il vero plus è il proprietario, simpatico e molto disponibile, che ci ha accolto con calore accompagnandoci poi con la sua auto per un tour di Stamford e dintorni. Da segnalare l' eccellente ristorante, l' agnello che abbiamo gustato è indimenticabile così come i vini. Non dispone di ascensore né di aria condizionata. Eravamo gli unici ospiti dell' hotel: la mancanza di una colazione tradizionale a buffet o all' inglese, ma comunque sostituita da prodotti confezionati, e il riscaldamento non funzionante a cui si è ovviato con una stufetta elettrica in camera, si possono capire e non incidono negativamente sul giudizio globale. Ci tornerò se dovessi passare a Stamford.

Very disappointing visit,on expressing concerns about the unfinished appearance of the room( one wall was bare hard wood, apparently recent soundproofing had been carried out,but the job hadn,t been completed,not painted or papered),the proprietor appeared quite complacent. I didn,t feel the room should have been available for occupancy in it,s current state! I explained on booking that I,d had a recent knee injury,but sadly this wasn,t taken into consideration,we were on the 2nd floor,the room had an ensuite with a bath,no shower or shower attachment,I mentioned this the following day,and was told that " perhaps I could have given you a room with a walk in shower"!!! I felt the accomodation spoilt our stay,we were due to stay for 2 nights,but moved to alternative hotel,very disappointed,wouldn,t recommend staying here.

Perfect position in town to access everything in stamford. We stayed here for an overnight stay for a weekend in stamford. Decided to try out the hotel for dinner and we weren't disappointed. This place is definitely a hidden treasure when it comes to great quality food at a great price. Okay, it may not be buzzing with activity but if you are looking for quality you will find it here. Can't recommend it enough. It is obvious from what was served up that the chef/owner loves producing a great meal with quality produce.

If you appreciate quality authentic cuisine and wine then you'll love the restaurant at Candlesticks. Nelio (chef / owner) cooks everything from scratch. I had the most delicious lobster bisque and beef bougorginon. A small daily menu that demonstrates the freshness of ingredients and his dedication to provide dishes that resonate the family tradition and knowledge of Portuguese and Mediterranean cuisine. I cannot recommend this place enough and have already been raving to my very foodie friends from France and Italy to book dinner here as they will be delighted. Don't miss out!!! I'll definitely be back and wouldn't stay anywhere else in Stamford.

Fairly unique place restaurant with 8 rooms.We had no2 right at the top . Breakfast was in a cupboard in a fridge in the room.Toaster and kettle in with fridge. To get in you need to ring Portuguese owner who is resident next door. We didn't make use of bar or restaurant..In fact last night nobody had booked for food so the bar area was locked up..We had a front door key and room key.It was located very central to town. As we didn't make use of the facilities we cannot score on the service.Room wise certain things need to be tidied up..But we got a great night's sleep..

Had a lovely stay at this hotel, which we enjoyed very much. It is very old and atmospheric but no ghosts disturbed our peace. The location is very central and we managed a tour of the town within an hour. I loved the fact that I could have my breakfast in bed without having to get dressed and go down to the dining room. The bed was comfortable but I wished I'd have the foresight to ask for an additional pillow. The host was very obliging, friendly and accomodating and went out of his way to book us in at the last moment, and in fact, re-arranged his rooms to suit our particular needs. Above the call of duty. Thank you for a really pleasant stay. We had dinner in the restaurant downstairs. Excellent food. I really recommend the lamb and the pineapple dessert.

Booked to stay 2 nights, found another hotel for the 2nd night. Owner is really nice but the place is twenty/thirty years out of date. Rooms very small, shower not good and “breakfast” was in a fridge in the room. Very retro, but not in a good way. Shame because the owner is a really nice bloke.

Owner is really friendly , service is immaculate, had a lovely meal very good quality for the price . We stayed the night also, in a snug and peaceful room with all the necessities for a perfect stay . Then we were awoken to a beautiful breakfast downstairs which was a beautiful start to a day out in stamford . Overall this stay was impeccable ,very good pricing and lovely people and environment to stay in .

A bit past its best. Needs a full refurb, sadly stuck in the 90s. Friendly and helpful presumed owner who checked us in after having to call and wait to be let in. If you want check in outside restaurant hours you will need to call. Think we were the only guests that night, just not a great place sadly.

£80 a night is very expensive for this hotel. Looks derelict and ran down from the outside. Door is always locked. We were shown to our room which had mould on the curtain in the bathroom. Breakfast consists of bread in a sandwich bag, yogurt and juice which were in a mini fridge. Hotel is definitely in need of a revamp.

I have stayed at the Candlesticks very frequently for the last 15 years, and I have never been disappointed. The Host offers superb hospitality, serves excellent food in his restaurant, including a very hearty cooked breakfast as well as a light breakfast if preferred that is provided in your room within the fridge. A great selection of wines to compliment your meals and a cosy bar with a good selection of spirits and quality Port. For the price you pay, the Candlesticks is extremely good value for money. Always 1st choice for me.

Hotel comments only: location is great, bed is comfy but the towels smelt of damp so bad that your hands smelt, breakfast included 4 bits of bread decanted into a zip lock bag and the shower pressure was very bad I didn't even bother. Unfortunately I wouldn't stay again, even for the great price.

Very disappointing. Tiny room. Poor bathroom and a mattress with the springs poking through it. When the friends I was travelling with and I reacted to the exhorbitant price of a cooked breakfast the owner retorted that another establishment charged double that or we could go to Wetherspoons and have a pint with it. Basil Fawlty lives on in Stamford.

my stay here was very disappointing and represented very poor value. Even allowing for the fact that there was Wi-Fi and a small free car park, this is the worst hotel I can ever remember staying at. Apart from checking in I never saw any staff in the hotel. Apart from arrival after 15.00 when the rooms were not yet ready for occupation, the bar area was always padlocked off. The self service breakfast was the most basic and frugal (one slice of white bread one quarter of a pint of milk ,Weetabix or Coco pops and 100ml of orange juice per person per day) in a cupboard in the tiny cramped and grubby room. Very limited hot water in the shower. There are many dubious reviews on this (and other sites ) which give this hotel four or five stars which clearly must be fakes and do not accurately represent the state of this hotel.

Excellent staff, excellent service with a cosy interior. Loved the food and wine selection!!! The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming too!! Will definitely stay again or recommend to a friend.

Lovely restaurant and character full accommodation close to the centre of this lovely market town. Five minutes walk from the market place and shops. Something different, friendly and convenient.

Candlesticks is a very lovely little hotel in a quiet back lane, close to the centre of Stamford. I received a very friendly welcoming on my arrival, and service throughout my stay was impeccable, plus this hotel is so nearby to the train station. Highly recommended.

Room 6 on the 2nd floor, the host managed our luggage upstairs. The shower was extremely hot or cold, so I finally decided to fill the bathtub. The breakfast is in the fridge (continental)

Good town centre location with parking, pleasant owner. Room rather small, clean but very tired. Biggest disappointment was breakfast, four slices of soggy white bread in a tiny fridge in the room, the toaster burnt two of them! Tea, coffee kettle and milk. Strange, there is a nice little restaurant area downstairs could easily put on a small self service breakfast 🙂

We went back to candlesticks last night, it’s been eleven years, it’s where my husband proposed to me and nothing has changed, my husband and I got engaged but now live in Weymouth so it’s very special to us. We went back our 9th wedding anniversary and it was so special. They looked at our photos and put us on the same table this was lovely and we’re so friendly. The food was excellent the portions were not the biggest some more veg would have been good. Also it wasn’t very warm but these things were never going to take away from a truly magical evening. Eating under candlelight beautiful food, so special we were even given an anniversary card so special. This place will always be special in our hearts and the same amazing service remains. A magical evening, highly recommended.

Food and nelio both fantastic. Only came for the 3 course meal and was greeted brilliantly by nelio. Service was great and food was brilliant. Would definitely return.

When we arrived at 1245 the place was all locked up. As we were slightly early we left and returned at 1500. Still no-one about so I rang the number on the door. When he turned up there was no apology just a statement that the room wasn't ready as he was waiting for laundry and we he would call us when the room was ready. We eventually entered the tiny room at 1700. We were told breakfast consisted of what was in a cupboard in our room. Although the room was clean it was cluttered with a tiny TV hidden in the corner. There was an over large sink in in the bathroom with small taps which made washing ones hands very difficult. All in all I found the proprietor unhelpful and unsympathetic and we shall not be returning I . Russ Young, Whitstable

Absolutely divine food....if you like steaks then you're in for a treat...location is deep in stamford and so quant ...decor needs updating but I guess that's the doesn't matter when the food is beautiful 😋
